Walk-The-Line: Johnny Cash and Functional Foods

March 02, 2017

“Love is a burning thing

And it makes a firery ring

Bound by wild desire

I fell in to a ring of fire

I fell into a burning ring of fire

I went down, down, down

And the flames went higher

And it burns, burns, burns

The ring of fire”

-Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash, the man in black, a powerful singer that wrote of sorrow, tribulation and redemption.  As athletes, these experiences are a very real part of competition and the song ‘Ring of Fire’ is how I would describe my personal relationship with running.  I fell in love with the sport and it took me down in a blaze of inflammation.  Inflammation was one of my biggest battles when trying to reclaim my health and my running.  During this battle I discovered ‘Functional Foods.’

The term ‘Functional Food’ is starting to become a buzzword these days, and for good reason.  For me the term has a strong relationship to functional medicine.  I was inspired to get my degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine because I love the philosophy that nutrition can do more for your body than provide you with carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals, but also have interesting health promoting and disease fighting effects.  The truth is, the foods we eat are a complicated combination of molecules that contain many bioactive components that we are still trying to research and understand.  We can use these functional foods in our favor and incorporate them into our diets according to our health goals.

For example Beets and Cordyceps are big functional foods right now, actually they were functional foods in the past as well!  Beets were used by the Romans as medicine and Cordyceps were used, and are still used, in Traditional Chinese Medicine12.  We seriously need to connect back to ancient traditions.  There are thousands of years of experience that we can learn from.  Modern science is confirming things that the ancients have known and practiced for centuries.

In the athletic world, beets are being shown to enhance performance and improve cardiovascular health.  But this only scratches the surface.  Beets also contain potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capabilities.  Beets contain highly bioactive pigments known as betalains and highly bioactive phenolics, such as rutin, epicatechin and caffeic acid3.  Exercise causes A LOT of oxidative stress, which when well managed can lead to healthy muscle building and performance gains.  But it can be a hard battle to build your body up as fast as you are breaking it down.  Signs to watch out for are excessive and persistent muscle soreness, reduced performance, low tolerance for exercise, injury, loss of motivation, and a weak immune system.  Beet pigments and phenolics have been shown to protect the body against free radical damage, damage to DNA, and damage to lipid and protein structures3.  Therefore, beets are a great way to help you build your body back up after breaking it down.

Another functional food, Cordyceps, are known in the athletic world to boost oxygen in the body and increase time to exhaustion, but they also contain a powerful bio-metabolite called Cordycepin which has a very potent anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antioxidant activities2. Cordyceps can protect your liver, kidneys, heart, blood vessels, lungs, brain and spinal cord, immune system, and sexual systems, there is a reason it’s nicknamed “Himalayan Viagra”.  This is in addition to having anti-cancer, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activities2!

We incorporated both these functional foods into our BeetBeta formula. We think a dose of beets and cordyceps on a regular basis can help your body in more ways than you can imagine.  Health gains are just as important as performance gains, and beets and cordyceps do both.

Our mission at The Human Nutrition Project, is to incorporate as many functional foods into our formulas so you are not only getting performance gains, but also health gains with foods that have a lot of bioactive protective mechanisms.  When you are pushing the envelope you are walking a fine line of trying to maintain your health.  Functional foods are a way to confidently walk-the-line without falling off.
